Northeast Ocean Data is pleased to announce the release of new mapping data on coastal and marine recreational activities in the northeastern United States.
The data on commercial whale watching areas, SCUBA diving locations, long-distance sailing race routes, and other individual activities are available in the Recreation viewer and the Data Explorer. The new datasets add to the recreational boating and coastal recreation area data previously available on Northeast Ocean Data.
The data come from a project launched by the Northeast Regional Planning Body (RPB) in 2015 to collect regional spatial data depicting coastal and marine recreational activities. The project team, consisting of Point 97, SeaPlan, and the Surfrider Foundation, used a variety of online and in-person participatory mapping techniques to characterize various recreational sectors. More information is available in the project’s final report.
